Built
10th century

Wachsenburg Castle was originally built in the 10th century, but it was extensively reconstructed in the 17th and 19th century.
During its history, Wachsenburg Castle has had its fair share of troubles. In 1441 a notorious robber baron took control of the castle and made it his base for his raids on the merchants of Erfurt.
The well-preserved castle (most recently restored in the 1990s) now houses a museum, a hotel and a restaurant.

This looks like an intriguing place to visit. So cool how it sits so high on a mountain. I would love to eat at its restaurant!

First time I saw it was from, a turnout on a highway overlooking it on a valley, my dad pulled over, so we could pile out and stretch, it was amazing to look at, and at was like a fairy-tale wonder to behold. My Dad said it was built by a mad Bavarian King, Ludwig something or another. I didn't think he was too mad building a beautiful place like that!
