The Monastery That Seems Impossible to Exist

Legend says it was founded in 386 AD after two monks followed a vision to a sacred cave. That cave became the heart of the monastery — its walls are covered in vivid frescoes.
In 2017, restorers discovered a secret tunnel leading to a hidden chapel sealed for centuries.
Despite being Orthodox, the monastery was protected and honored by Ottoman sultans.
Today, Sumela is on the path to UNESCO World Heritage status.
