The Wartburg is a castle originally built in the Middle Ages. It is situated on a 410 meters (1,350 ft) precipice, overlooking the town of Eisenach. In 1999, UNESCO added Wartburg Castle to the World Heritage List.
Wartburg Castle, Germany Title of the site: Wartburg Castle Description: "Wartburg Castle blends superbly into its forest surroundings and is in many ways 'the ideal castle'. Although it has retained some original sections from the feudal period, the form it acquired during the 19th-century reconstitution gives a good idea of what this fortress might have been at the height of its military and seigneurial power. It was during his exile at Wartburg Castle that Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German." Year of inscription: 1999 Reference: whc.unesco.org/en/list/897

AG1_6484 Wartburg Presumable the most famous castle complex of the world. A certain mister WAGNER, an opera composer (forenamed Richard) provided this castle ground to worldwide fame. Tannhäuser, full title Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg, "Tannhäuser and the Minnesingers' Contest at Wartburg") is an 1845 opera in three acts, music and text by Richard Wagner, (WWV 70 in the catalogue of the composer's works) based on two German legends: Tannhäuser, the mythologized medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through much of Wagner's mature work. Wagner made a number of revisions of the opera throughout his life, and was still unsatisfied with its format when he died. The most significant revision was made for the opera's premiere in Paris in 1861; however, the production there was a failure, partly for political reasons. The opera remains a staple of major opera house repertoire in the 21st century. (see also my pictures under "EISENACH") The automobiles "WARTBURG" are from Eisenach.
