During the High Middle Ages, Lord von Oberhofen built Balm Castle on a hill above the village. In 1306 the von Eschenbach family (who owned the castle by that time) was forced to sell Oberhofen and the castle to the Habsburgs.

Photographed during a trip on the paddle steamer DS BLÜMLISALP which was built in 1906. She worked on the Thunersee until 1971 when she was withdrawn from service. That should have been the end of this beautiful and elegant vessel but, thanks to the Vaporama Association, after many years out of use she underwent a two year renovation and sailed on her second maiden voyage in 1992.
